Useful time management techniques for Graduate students

During the first months in the graduate school, you feel so excited about the level of your studies. But later on, you seem to be discouraged and very much stressed. Graduate Students always have plenty of things to do but very little time to accomplish them. You should do something for managing your time, a s time is one of the most valuable resources every person needs to use it wisely. When you lose it, it will never come back again, so you need to make the most of it. You need to use techniques of time management in order to be organized, as if you are not organized, then everything will be in disarray. It is then necessary to put things in such order to achieve efficient and effective performance. And this will encourage you to be more productive and contented.

Here are several time management techniques for graduate students:
  • 1. Create a plan for two years ahead with a yearly calendar which will be divided into months and schedule all your appointments, tasks and goals in it.
  • 2. Make it a habit to check your calendar, take note of your future assignments and goals.
  • 3. Divide the tasks and assignments into smaller parts. It will be manageable and easier to accomplish them.
  • 4. Set deadlines to your goals to have a clear picture of time period you need to spend on each particular goal.
  • 5. Classify your tasks according to their priority. You decide which is the most important or urgent among your tasks and which of them must be accomplished first.
  • 6. Avoid distractions and interruptions and focus on the work you accomplish at the moment.
  • 7. You should be able to know the time period where you are very productive. Identify your biological highs and lows. Are you at your best in the morning or in the afternoon? Plan your day properly. Try to accomplish the most difficult task during the time when you are at your best to do something.
  • 8. Do not be ashamed to say "No" to a person if you unable to fulfill his/her request. There are occasions wherein you will be given additional courses, responsibilities of job, activities which outside your schedule.

Try to examine carefully how relevant they are to you, before you decide to accept them. Following these time management techniques you will learn how to be more productive and contended.
